City’s 2012 Target Squad swimmer Sian Morgan made swimming history when she joined her team mates at the new Freeman’s Quay Leisure Centre in Durham for the North East Region Senior /Junior Championships.
Still only fourteen years of age Morgan still swims as a junior but her swims over the weekend earned her no less that six Senior and Junior titles and qualified her for three Welsh Junior records on 200m 800m and 1500m freestyle. Her time of 8.45.22 in the 800m event also broke the oldest Yorkshire junior record standing which had stood since 1980. She also gained two more National Youth qualifying times in 100m and 400m freestyle and in total won six gold and one bronze medal. Morgan trains with Leisure Services Coaching and Training scheme and is a pupil at Bradford Grammar School
Fellow Grammar School pupils David Brown and Ben Balmforth also excelled at the meet. Brown claiming silver in the junior 50m event and eighth place in the 200m event.
Balmforth joined him on the rostrum in the 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke to claim three bronze medals. He also claimed sixth place in the 200m individual medley.
Fifth place junior finishes went to the 200m individual medley Yorkshire champion Sam O’Donohoe in the 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley.
Sixth places in the senior events went to Jenna Chatburn in the 100m breaststroke and Michael Bonson in the 800m freestyle whilst Lewis Sharp claimed eighth place in the senior 800m freestyle and ninth place in the longer 1500m event. Bonson also finished in tenth place in the 400m individual medley.
Other qualifiers were Hannah Midgley, Lucy Burnside, Jennifer Bonson and Luke Constantine
