City of Bradford age group swimmers travelled to Ponds Forge Sheffield for the first of this summer’s North East Region BAGCAT Championships.
For thirteen year old Sam O’Donohoe the journey was more than worthwhile when he rose to the occasion and claimed his second National Qualifying Time of the season in the boys thirteen years 100m backstroke.
Finishing in a time of 1.08.04 to claim bronze medal position he was just inside the qualifying time and will swim this event along with the 200m freestyle at the National Age groups in late July. He also finished in sixth place in the 200m freestyle.
Twelve year olds Lydia Biddiscombe and Joshua Zenner showed that their increased training was paying dividends when Lydia finished in fourth place in the girls twelve years 100m backstroke and Joshua claimed ninth place in the boys 200m butterfly.
Following on his success at the Welsh National Championships earlier this year, thirteen year old James Dawson had two final placing in the boy’s thirteen years 200m butterfly and 100m Breaststroke.
Last but by no means had least Niki Chatburn aged twelve finished in ninth place in the girls twelve years 100m Breaststroke.
The swimmers who all train with Leisure Services Coaching and Training Scheme will swim at the second in the series of meets which takes place this weekend also at Ponds Forge.

The second in the series of North East Region BAGCAT Championships brought yet more success for thirteen year old Sam O’Donohoe.
Having already achieved two National Qualifying times for this season he showed his determination and gained three more times at the meet held at Ponds Forge Sheffield.
His times came in the 100m freestyle where he dipped under the minute for the first time in a 50 metre pool and recorded a time of 59.65 to claim a silver medal and the 200m individual medley where he equalled the qualifying time of 2.31.02 to finish in eighth place. He also finished in ninth place in the 400m freestyle in a time of 4.31.51.
Breaststroke specialist David Brown finished in fifth place in the 200m event in time of 2.45.59.
For the second week in succession twelve year olds Lydia Biddiscombe and Joshua Zenner finaled with Lydia finishing in a time of 2.39.67 in the 200m backstroke finishing 6th and Joshua finishing in a time of 1.15.25 in the 100m butterfly which gave him a 9th place.
James Dawson posted two final placings in the thirteen years age group in the 100m butterfly and 200m breaststroke and Niki Chatburn completed the gruelling 1500m freestyle to finish in tenth place in the girls 12 years age group.
