Congratulations to our swimmers on their Yorkshire titles and medals.

City of Bradford had just two representatives at the Yorkshire Swimming Association’s annual Masters Championships held at Scarborough Indoor Pool.

Chris Brown was prolific in winning no less than four County Titles. His wins came in the 50m and 100m butterfly and 50m and 100m backstroke in the 55/59 years age group. Brown is coached by Steve Eddison who also swam at the meet.

Having this year moved up an age group to the 60/65 years group Eddison showed his versatility when he came home with bronze medals in the 100m breaststroke and freestyle. He also placed fourth in the 100m individual medley and 50m freestyle and sixth in the 50m breaststroke.

Both swimmers train with Bradford Aquatics Development Programme.

PICT0025Garry Vilmans Report for 2009

I have done my last swim this year. Which happens to be my biggest challenge so far in my open water swimming career. Last year the Windermere Championship 10.5 Miles was abandoned after 90 Minutes because of bad weather This year it did go ahead. 31 swimmers started but only 20 finished. I was one off the lucky ones I finished in a time of 7 Hours 47 Minutes 05 Seconds.

The weather was very changeable, with the wind changing direction all the time, very heavy rain for a few Hours The sun even came out for a while, and I had a very strong cross wind for the last 3 Miles.Plus the water temperature dropped dramatically at the top end of the lake, as there had been a lot of rain the week before the swim, and a lot of cold water was coming down from the Mountains. But that's what open water swimming is all about.(the weather plays a big part in whether you finish a race or not)

PICT0026I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Coaching staff at Shipley pool, I won't single out any one person as they have all been fantastic, Over the last 3 years they have helped me train up and get strong enough to finish these open water race's.

Plus I would like to thank (British Long Distance Swimming Association) for organising these events

I am considering having a go at Loch Lomond next year, 21.6 Miles.

Open Water Review

My name is Garry Vilmans I have been training at Shipley pool with the masters squad for the last three years. I have not done any pool race's, But I really enjoy open water swimming. Here is a short report for 2008.

I only managed to do 4 race's, Wykeham 5k, Rivington 4Miles/2Miles, Bala 6Miles,

wind08hMy Goal for 2008 was to do the 10.5 Mile Windermere swim in September but first I had to complete a 6 Mile swim, which I managed to do at Bala in a time of 4 hrs 31mins. All times and place's and pictures can be seen on . B. L. D. S. A web site,

I was accepted and was given a place to compete in the Windermere championship, But on the day of the swim the weather deteriorated very quickly after the start of the race, the wind started up very strong, but the problem was the wind was was blowing down the lake and we were swimming up. All the swimmers were enjoying the swim but all of the support rowing boats could not keep up with their swimmers, and the swim had to be abandoned 90 minutes into the race. The swell on the lake was so bad that 2 of the support rowing boats were swamped, They were picked up very quickly by the safety boats, This was to be the 52nd Windermere Championship held by the bldsa and the first time ever that it had to be abandoned.

I am going to give it another go this year, Hope the weather is a lot better.

Finally I have done my first race this year

Wykeham Lake Championship - 14 June 2009

3 swimmers from City of Bradford took part;

  • Lucy Burnside 2nd place - 2 Miles in 41.10minutes
  • Ian Stapleton 1st place - 5k in 1hr 14min 57sec
  • Garry Vilmans 19th place - 5k in 1hr 56min 25sec

Best Regards Garry Vilmans
