City of Bradford swimmers started off the New Year in fine style, testing their racing fitness at the prestigious Gateshead and Whickham Burns Meet. A small squad of experienced swimmers travelled south to Ponds Forge Sheffield to compete against Olympians Rebecca Adlington, Joanne Jackson and Caitlin McClatchey in a high quality field.
National medallist and 2012 target squad member Sian Morgan swimming in the girls 14/15 years age group came home with two bronze medals in the 200m and 400m freestyle and was City’s only medallist at the meet. She was also paced fourth in the 100m freestyle, fifth in the 50m freestyle, sixth in the 50m butterfly and 200m individual medley and seventh in the longer 400m medley. Over the weekend Sian recorded six national qualifying times, four personal best times and two British Championship qualifying times.
Following his success at last years National Age Group Championship it was fourteen year old Sam O’Donohoe who led the way in the boy’s events with a fifth placing in the 100m backstroke, sixth in the 200m and 400m freestyle, eighth in the 200m individual medley, and two ninth place finishes in the 200m backstroke and 100m freestyle. Sam went home more than satisfied with four personal best times and a national qualifying time in the 400m freestyle.
Sixteen year olds Jenna Chatburn and Ben Balmforth also had top ten finishes with ninth placings in the 100m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke respectively.
Other swimmers competing for City were newcomer Dmitry Kadochnikov who recorded a personal best time in the 400m individual medley and thirteen year old Lydia Biddiscombe who swam a best time in the 100m backstroke to finish in eleventh place.
