Commonwealth Youth Games 2011, Isle of Man
Seventeen year old swimmer, Ilkley Siân Morgan, a pupil of Bradford Grammar School, competed on the World stage this week at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man. Siân, part of a strong Welsh squad, swam in three individual races and two relays.
Competing on Day one of the meet, Siân swam a personal best time of 8.41.03 in the 800m freestyle to claim fourth position in the presence of Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, who said he was impressed with her swim when he spoke to her after her race. Later that evening, Siân swam a storming leg (56.19) in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay to claim her first medal and position on the podium as Wales finished third behind Australia and England and smashed the Welsh senior record.
On day two, Siân swam a huge personal best time of 4.09.71 in the 400m freestyle to claim another bronze medal, only missing out to two Australians and breaking the Yorkshire Senior record of 4.10.58 that was set in 2003. Just a few minutes later, straight after her medal ceremony, Siân was back in the pool leading the Welsh team off in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay. She gave the team an impressive start with a leading time of 1.59.79, beating even the Australians to give Wales a leading position after the first leg. In a very exciting race, Wales were beaten by Australia so claimed the silver medal and another position on the podium for Siân. Again, the team set a new Welsh senior record, breaking the previous record set in 2001 by over 22 seconds.
The third and last day saw Siân set another personal best time of 1.59.67 in the 200m freestyle event, finishing in fifth position, just missing out on a medal by 0.12 of a second in a finger tip finish.
Siân thoroughly enjoyed the experience of competing at the highest level against some of the best Youth swimmers in the world. She also had the opportunity of meeting other athletes from different sports from all the Commonwealth countries.
Commenting on her experience, Siân said, “It was a fantastic way to conclude my junior swimming career and to have been on the podium three times at such an event was a dream come true. I have come home with three medals and the confidence I need to set my sights high as I move up into the senior ranks.”
Many congratulations to Siân on her excellent performances at the Commonwealth Youth Games. The competition in the Isle Of Man, as you would expect was of the highest quality with some of the best youth swimmers in the world representing the stronger Commonwealth nations. Not only were Siân’s times outstanding she also broke the Yorkshire Senior record on 400 free and was instrumental in the two free relays helping Wales to smash the National Senior records in both the 4x100 and 4x200 events. The highlights were of course her three medals though, 1 silver and 2 bronze and this was a fantastic accomplishment against competition of he highest possible standard that the Commonwealth has to offer.
Congratulations and very well done Siân!

Celtic Tri-Nations Competition for Siân
17 year old, Siân Morgan travelled down to the Welsh National Pool in Swansea late on Friday evening straight after completing her last AS examination at Bradford Grammar School. Siân had been selected to be part of the Welsh swimming team to take part in the Celtic Tri-Nations Competition from May 27 to 29. Wales took on Scotland and Ireland in this annual event. This was a fantastic opportunity for Siân to take part in another Senior International Meet following her Commonwealth Games debut in Delhi last October. She narrowly missed the podium taking fourth position in both 800m and 400m freestyle and 6th position in 200m freestyle.
After an exciting bank holiday weekend of swimming, Wales were worthy winners of the Celtic Tri-Nations trophy for the first time in the competition’s history.
This competition was the final trial before the selection of the Youth Commonwealth Games team and Siân eagerly waits to see if she will part of the Welsh team travelling to the Isle of Man in September.

Jamie Brown selected as a Young Ambassador for the School Sport Partnership
Congratulations to Jamie Brown who has been chosen as one of only 2 Young Ambassadors for the West Bradford Schools Partnership.
The Young Ambassador movement commenced in 2006 following London’s successful Olympic bid where Lord Coe promised the UK would use the power of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire millions of young people to become involved in sport. Young Ambassadors are selected due to their sporting talent, and more importantly, due to their outstanding commitment and ability as young leaders or volunteers.
The role of a Young Ambassador involves increasing participation in school sport and PE, spreading the word of the Olympic and Paralympic Values “respect, friendship, personal excellence, courage, determination, inspiration and equality” and promoting the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a healthy lifestyle.

Swim Clinic
Bradford Grammar School 17th January 2010
Over forty City of Bradford swimmers and coaches attended a swim clinic run by former City of Bradford coach Ian Armiger and Commonwealth record holder Joe Roebuck. The clinic, entitled “From Age Group To Major Games Podium” was held at Bradford Grammar School and gave swimmers an insight into what could lie ahead for them if they continue their swimming careers into adult life.
Armiger, now director of swimming at Loughborough university and a GB international coach, conducted two sessions in the pool assisted by Roebuck who is currently the 400m Individual Medley Commonwealth record holder. Roebuck demonstrated his skills in the water and also had photos taken with the swimmers.
Following lunch the visitors gave a talk illustrated by videos of Commonwealth medallists and record holders then answered questions from swimmers, coaches and parents. All swimmers received a signed certificate and the club hope to repeat this type of clinic in the future.

A huge Congratulations and Thank you to Chris Lund, Geoff Killock, Mike Dawson & Steve Eddison who have now qualified as Level 1 Judges. They have put in a lot of time and volunteer hours to achieve this and it is much appreciated by everyone in the club. They now join the band of too often unsung volunteer officials without whom our galas could not take place and this is a good opportunity to say

Dyon is Schools Biathlon Champion
The British Schools Biathlon Championships were held in Bath last weekend, with Crashaw School pupil Dyon Whiteley travelling down the long distance to compete in the running and swimming event.
Dyon who is currently the Yorkshire Schools Biathlon Champion was ranked 1st in the year 11 boys going into the competition but it was by no means a forgone conclusion that he would take the title. Perfect weather conditions helped in the 1000m run and Dyon led for most of the race. The final 100m saw Dyon being chased down however he managed to hold the lead and finished in a dead heat with a time of 2:42.82 equating to 1384 points.
The afternoon swim provided even more tension as Dyon was out-touched into 5th place (in heat, 6th overall) with a time of 59.42 for his 100m swim. A great swim by Thomas Crew in a time of 55.17 meant that the next 1/2 hour was unbearable, working out the points proved that it was going to be a very close finish. As the results were posted a wave of relief and elation washed over Dyon as he realised that all his hard work had come to fruition. Dyon took the title for the year 11 boys with a total of 2632 point to become British Schools Biathlon Champion.
Dyon is a member of Pudsey & Bramley Athletics Club and swims with the City of Bradford Swimming Club.

Talent Development Selections
City of Bradford’s Sam O’Donohoe and James Dawson were recently selected for an Amateur Swimming Association, North East Region Training Camp. The camp which was held at the new 50m Sunderland Aquatic Centre was a chance for swimmers from the North East to test the water at this prestigious facility. This initiative is an additional activity of the English Talent Development Programme Level 1, as part of the Beacon programme investment in the ASA North East Region.
Swimmers were selected from the North East Region winter short course championships held at Harrogate last November and from the Yorkshire BAGCAT championships held at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds in February/March this year.
The day consisted of a pool session for swimmers, coach’s workshop and parent’s presentations and was headed up by Dave Legge the Regional Talent and Development Coach.
Both Sam and James train with Bradford Council’s Leisure Services Coaching and Training Scheme and are names to watch for the future.
